Coating CentreStations of the Steinway

Step inside the Steinway & Sons Coating Centre, where grand and upright pianos receive the lustrous high-gloss finish for which they are celebrated worldwide — alongside their incomparable sound.
The process begins with a filler spray applied to the raw cases. After a day of curing, the surface is sanded and repainted. The Steinway & Sons logo is then affixed before it disappears beneath the final lacquer. The polyester finish is applied in several cross passes inside specially equipped lacquering booths — using turning constructions made exclusively for Steinway & Sons — until a thickness of approximately one millimetre is achieved.
After 8 to 21 days of drying, the finish thickness is inspected before each instrument moves on to the next stage of the manufactory.
