Discover the heart and soul of every Steinway grand piano — the soundboard. While the strings produce the initial vibration, it is the soundboard that amplifies and accentuates the sound, giving the instrument its full, rich, and legendary tone.

Craftsmen source the soundboard's wood exclusively from Sitka spruce grown in North America. Each plank is selected against rigorous quality standards, evaluated by colour, fibre structure, and the spacing of growth rings. The individual boards are then joined, fitted with ribs, and crowned with a precise curve — a distinctive arch that ensures maximum flexibility, richness of sound, and an extended sustain.

The soundboard is the fifth station in the Steinway manufactory in Hamburg. It is also the component that, more than any other single part, is responsible for the acoustic character that sets Steinway apart.
