Learn about the passion for precision that drives parts production at the Steinway manufactory. Crafting by hand has been at the heart of every Steinway grand and upright piano since 1853 — and that tradition continues today. Machines only take over when they can work more precisely than human hands: state-of-the-art CNC technology achieves tolerances of one tenth of a millimetre.

More than 90 percent of the 12,000 individual components in each Steinway instrument are produced in-house. This degree of vertical integration allows the manufactory to maintain strict quality control at every step and ensures that each part — from the smallest pin to the largest structural element — meets the standards that define the Steinway sound.

Parts production is the fourth station in the Steinway manufactory in Hamburg, sitting at the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing science.
