STEINWAY FACRORY: THE DAMPER DEPARTMENT

Have you ever considered working at the Steinway & Sons Hamburg Factory? It is never too late to apply! Take inspiration from Marcel Treyz, who works in damper department. Together with his colleagues Tatjana Stetefeld and Patrick Brunner, he shows what working in damping is all about. It’s all about the many tasks involved in preparing the damping for installation in Steinway grand pianos.

As part of Steinway’s production process, damping plays a critical role in the quality and sound of each grand piano. Damping preparation at Steinway involves numerous steps that must be performed carefully, with great dedication, and to perfection. The team cuts felt, glues it on, hammers wires, and doublechecks each damper head to make sure the material is perfect and ready to be installed in the grand piano. It’s a job which demands patience and grace, as hurrying could lead to inaccuracies.

Each Steinway grand piano is unique and presents its own challenges. Myriad small components can be different on each grand piano and require precise balance as well an understanding of the intricacies of each instrument. A perfectionist approach allows us to deliver the highest quality. After all, every Steinway grand piano is a distinctive masterpiece and a tribute to the craftsmanship that Steinway & Sons has cultivated for over 170 years.
