A work of great detail – the Regulation

The keyboard covers a sophisticated and precisely tuned action assembly. When played, it transmits the force of the pianist’s key strokes to the strings. After the 88 keys, hammers and strings are assembled, a total of around 7,500 components will work together to create a harmonious and flawless tone quality.

However, this only works if all keys are accurately adjusted and tared. For example, each key must have a precisely defined down and up weight. Our Steinway technicians also regulate the hammer heads and install dampers. This regulation is one of the most time-consuming steps in grand and upright piano building and requires years of experience and absolute precision.
