Steinway’s treasure chamber – the Lumberyard

The exquisite sound of Steinway upright and grand pianos depends on the finest selection of wood. The piano craftsmen use woods such as spruce, maple, mahogany, pine and beech for the different parts of the instrument. Steinway technicians only choose materials with outstanding qualities, paying close attention to weight, grain and the direction of growth.

The timber is then left to dry for two years in the lumberyard. It then takes another three weeks in a drying chamber to remove almost all the moisture from the wood through controlled and continual air circulation where it loses its tension, leaving it strong and stable. The result: optimal vibrational behaviour and excellent resonance.
