In our Hamburg and New York factories, the Steinway & Sons piano craftsmen work on every grand piano with great passion and precision. Pianists from all over the world can feel their hard work and dedication, the high-quality workmanship in every key stroke. The grand pianos have been renowned for their powerful resonance since 1853, casting their magic whether in concert halls, conservatoires or living rooms.
The unique Steinway sound, which inspires musicians worldwide, is founded on the finest selection of wood. Storage for two years in the lumberyard allows it to dry, while rim bending gives the grand piano its distinctive shape. And with the creation of the soundboard, the heart of the piano truly starts to beat. Find out why every grand piano needs an iron plate, and what goes into attaching the strings. We reveal the fascinating details behind the regulation of the mechanics and the voicing of a grand piano.
You can visit us at our workshop online or perhaps we’ll see you in person soon, when you play your new Steinway & Sons grand piano in the selection room in Hamburg for the first time.
