The heart and soul of a piano – the Soundboard
The soundboard is the heart and soul of the piano as it provides the instrument with its full and rich sound. The strings produce the sound but the soundboard amplifies and accentuates it. One of the secrets to the great sonority of a Steinway & Sons grand piano lies in the construction of the soundboard. Our craftsmen use Sitka spruce from North America to build the soundboard.
This key component requires the wood to meet high quality standards and these can be found in its colour, fibre structure and rings. The soundboard is then glued together with the ribs and bridge. Its distinctive curve ensures maximum flexibility, richness of sound and a more extended tone.
