About Steinway & Sons

Since 1853, Steinway pianos have set an uncompromising standard for sound, touch, beauty, and investment value. Because of a dedication to continuous improvement, today’s Steinway remains the choice of 9 out of 10 concert artists, and it is the preferred piano of countless musicians, professional and amateur, throughout the world.

The inauguration of the new cogeneration unit

Two years, four months and fifteen days – and it’s done! Steinway shifts to green energy.

Around 1:00 p.m. on 23 September it was finally time: in the presence of Frank Horch, Senator for Economics, Transport and Innovation for the City of Hamburg, some distinguished guests and a large portion of the workforce, the new cogeneration unit was put into operation on the Steinway site at Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. Manfred Sitz, Vice President and Managing Director of Steinway & Sons, welcomed guests under blue skies and imparted some valuable information about the company’s investment, which amounted to almost 3.5 million. Modern, environmentally-friendly, efficient and innovative. With these qualities the cogeneration unit more than complies with all the guidelines for resource preservation and environmental protection, and Steinway & Sons once again sends out a clear signal as to its commitment to the location of Hamburg. Frank Horch showed he was well aware of the value this represents, expressing his congratulations and appreciation on behalf of the city. Once the ribbon was cut and the buzzer activated, the new system was put into action. From now on, it will supply the entire Steinway factory with power and heat, and is even able to cope with very cold temperatures in winter. The unit burns the wood that cannot be used in the production of the company’s first-class musical instruments, and does so with an average of up to 55% converted into energy instead of being disposed of.

Following the opening ceremony, guests and employees had the opportunity to take a tour and were able to see for themselves just how the system corresponds to the most cutting-edge standards. And since no event at Steinway & Sons can take place without a performance on the piano, there was one further innovation to impress the guests: Spirio, the new self-playing system, which is controlled via an iPad and provides the very best entertainment with no pianist required.
